Kelly Clarkson vs. Art of Play over a $15,000 singing bird

TLDR: Kelly Clarkson says a Brooklyn novelty shop talked down to her over a $15,000 singing bird, Art of Play says the bird was never for sale, and neither side is backing off.

Of all the celebrity beefs we expected this fall, an American Idol champion against a Brooklyn magic-and-puzzle shop over a mechanical bird was not on the list.

Kelly Clarkson is in an all-out BATTLE with a novelty store in Brooklyn after they passed on selling her a $15,000 singing bird

Barstool Sports: Kelly Clarkson is in an all-out BATTLE with a novelty store in Brooklyn after they passed on selling her a $15,000 singi

Here's how it started. Over the weekend Clarkson went on X and accused Art of Play of treating her like she couldn't afford anything in the store, and she compared it to the Pretty Woman boutique scene. In her account, she pointed at a tag on the wall that said "Singing Bird" and a staffer told her it was for sale but cost $15,000, then offered to find her something comparable. She called the employee condescending and told the shop it had just lost a huge sale.

Then the store answered, and the story turned. Art of Play says the bird she wanted is Molly, a one-of-a-kind mechanical bird that sings and dances in the magic shows the shop puts on at its Brooklyn location. The store says Molly is attached to the wall and was never for sale. It says staff offered to show her a similar automaton from a traditional German clockmaker that goes for about $2,000, and that she left before they could bring it out.

The beef between Kelly Clarkson and a toy store that is tearing this country in two! Are you Team Kelly or Team Toy Store??

The Yak's line about the beef "tearing this country in two" is a joke, but the internet did split into camps. Clarkson didn't let the store's explanation stand. She called the shop a liar, said the bird had a price tag on it, and said she supports small businesses but that doesn't give Art of Play a free pass to treat people badly. The store posted again saying it had reached out to her directly to clear up the misunderstanding.

Inside Barstool, people are on Clarkson's side, and at least one of them wants to see the receipts.

if i was granted one single wish from a magical being in this moment i would ask for the kelly clarkson security footage at art of play #TEAMKELLY

That's really what this comes down to. Both sides basically agree on what happened: there was a bird, there was a $15,000 number, and a cheaper bird got offered. What they disagree on is the tone, and you can't screenshot a tone. The store says Molly is part of the act. Clarkson says she knows when somebody's sizing her up. Unless that security footage comes out, it's one of the best-selling pop stars of the century against a Brooklyn curiosity shop, and whichever side you take says more about every bad retail experience you've had than about the bird.

What to watch: whether the store's direct outreach turns into a truce, or whether Clarkson keeps posting through it. Either way Molly is getting more publicity than any magic show could buy her, and she still isn't for sale.
